Unknown odor invades old man causing gas poisoning in a basement fainting
At 7:00 AM on the 25th, a gas poisoning incident occurred in an underground cold room at the intersection of Jianguo Daoli Street and Jiangle Xi Erdao Street in Jianguo Daoli District. A senior man was found unconscious in the toilet while using it. The Aijian Fire Squadron quickly arrived at the scene and rescued the elderly man. He was then taken to the hospital by an ambulance. As of now, the man has been out of danger after receiving timely medical treatment.
Reporters who arrived at the scene observed that the first floor housed a market, while the basement was used as a cold storage area. Multiple fire trucks were parked nearby, and firefighters were seen wearing heavy chemical protective suits and air respirators as they entered the basement for investigation. The site had already been cordoned off, and emergency alerts were in place.
According to one firefighter who participated in the rescue, a local woman mentioned that there had been a power outage in the basement for two hours the previous night. In the morning, she tried to contact the elderly man but couldn't reach him. Concerned, she went down to check on him and soon experienced dizziness and shortness of breath. She immediately called 119 for help.
Upon arrival, the firefighters entered the basement and rescued the trapped elderly man. Since the 120 emergency team had not yet arrived, Chen Yuejian, the deputy squadron leader of the Aijian Fire Fighting Squadron, performed CPR on the man until the ambulance arrived. The elderly man showed improvement, and he was then transported to Harbin First Hospital for further treatment.
Firefighters also discovered an oxygen cylinder and an acetylene cylinder in the basement during their investigation. According to the Harbin First Hospital, the elderly man, surnamed Xu, had regained consciousness and suffered no serious injuries. Xu explained that around 5:00 AM, while in the toilet, he smelled an unusual odor. Before he could react, he fainted and later woke up lying on a bed.
On-site personnel speculated that the incident might have been caused by welding activities in the confined space, leading to high concentrations of carbon monoxide. The exact cause is still under investigation.
**China Labor Insurance Network Tips:**
When working in or entering confined spaces, it's essential to wear proper respiratory protection and protective clothing based on the environment. For places like underground cold rooms, where long-term operations are common, it is recommended to use a powered air-purifying respirator. Ensure good ventilation and post warning signs to prevent accidents.
