Unknown odor invades old man causing gas poisoning in a basement fainting
At 7 a.m. on the 25th, a gas poisoning incident occurred in an underground cold room at the intersection of Jianguo Daoli Street and Jiangle Xi Erdao Street in Jianguo Daoli District. A senior man was found unconscious in the restroom while using the toilet. Firefighters from the Aijian Fire Squadron arrived at the scene and successfully rescued the elderly man. He was then taken to the hospital by an ambulance and is now out of danger.
The reporters who arrived at the scene observed that the first floor housed a market, while the basement was used as a cold storage area. Multiple fire trucks were parked nearby, and firefighters were seen wearing heavy chemical protective gear and air respirators as they entered the basement for investigation. The site had been cordoned off, and emergency alerts were in effect.
According to one firefighter involved in the rescue, a local woman mentioned that there had been a two-hour power outage in the basement the previous night. In the morning, she tried to contact the elderly man but couldn’t reach him. Concerned, she went down to check on him and experienced dizziness and shortness of breath before calling 119.
Upon arrival, the firefighters entered the basement and rescued the trapped elderly man. Since the 120 emergency team had not yet arrived, Deputy Squad Leader Chen Yuejian performed CPR on the man until medical help arrived. The elderly man showed improvement, and he was then transported to Harbin First Hospital for further treatment.
Firefighters also discovered an oxygen cylinder and an acetylene cylinder inside the basement during their investigation. According to the hospital, the elderly man, surnamed Xu, had regained consciousness and suffered no serious harm. Xu explained that around 5 a.m., while in the restroom, he noticed a strange smell. Before he could react, he lost consciousness and woke up later on a bed.
On-site personnel suspect that the incident may have been caused by high concentrations of carbon monoxide, possibly from welding activities conducted in the area. The exact cause is still under investigation.
**China Labor Insurance Network Tips:**
When entering confined spaces or working in such environments, it is crucial to wear proper respiratory protection and protective clothing based on the conditions. For areas like underground cold rooms, which require long-term operations, it is recommended to use a powered air-purifying respirator. Proper ventilation and clear warning signs should also be in place to prevent accidents.
