Building structure follows nature

Designer Mazzoleni and evolutionary biologist Shona have collaborated on an innovative architectural approach that draws from the natural world, particularly the structures found in animal furs. This project is not just about copying nature, but rather about understanding and integrating its principles into design. It's a dynamic framework that embraces cross-disciplinary inspiration, allowing ideas from biology to influence architecture in meaningful ways. Mazzoleni introduced two key concepts: one inspired by the insulating properties of polar bear fur, and another based on the iridescent qualities of bird feathers. While these designs are often labeled as "bionic," the term doesn't fully capture the essence of the work. Rather than creating buildings that merely resemble fur or feathers, the focus is on mimicking the underlying natural processes that make those materials so effective. The architecture itself develops a kind of "biological" structure, drawing from the evolutionary wisdom of the natural world that has been refined over billions of years.

This unique partnership between architects and biologists is not one-sided. Instead of treating scientists as mere consultants, the project emphasizes a true collaborative relationship.
