Chengdu, Sichuan shuts down 266 stone production and processing enterprises
A few days ago, a reporter learned from the Chengdu Water Affairs Bureau that by the end of 2013, the city had shut down 266 stone production and processing enterprises. All of these were located in Jinniu District and Jixian County, areas situated at the upper reaches of the city. This means that the upstream section of the Fuhe River has seen the most significant reduction in pollution sources in recent years, with the main source of sewage completely eliminated.
In August 2013, Chengdu initiated a new round of comprehensive urban and rural water environment management. As part of this effort, many stone production and processing companies in Jinniu District and Jixian County came under strict scrutiny. The local authorities intensified their efforts to tackle environmental violations, especially in areas where pollution was most severe.
A special "Distribution Map of Pollution Sources of Water Environment Treatment in Chengdu" highlighted the dense concentration of pollution sources at the border between Jinniu District and Jixian County. The map marked these areas with the highest level of red, indicating severe contamination. According to the report, all these pollution sources were linked to stone enterprises.
Survey data revealed that there were 266 such enterprises in total—249 in Jinniu District and 17 in Jixian County. These operations affected several rivers, including the Nancha River, the Thatch River, and the Wudouqu River in Jinniu. A local official stated that these stone companies were not only illegally discharging waste but also exploiting groundwater, causing air and noise pollution, and operating without proper licenses or within authorized boundaries. The crackdown on these businesses marked a major step forward in Chengdu's ongoing environmental protection campaign.
