Assemble a Chain Link Fence

How to Assemble a Chain Link Fence

Building a chain link fence is a practical and durable way to secure your property while maintaining a clean, professional look. Whether you're keeping pets and children safe or simply marking your boundaries, a properly installed chain link fence can last for years with minimal upkeep. Before starting, it's essential to plan carefully and gather the right tools to ensure a smooth installation process.

Tools You'll Need:

Tape measure
Post hole digger
Mason line
Stakes
Quick-dry concrete
Levels
Pliers
Sledge hammer
Wheelbarrow
Shovel and hoe
Wire cutters
Hacksaw or pipe cutter
Crescent wrench
Fence stretcher or ratcheting power pull

Step 1: Plan and Mark the Layout
Before digging, check local regulations regarding fence height, setbacks, and property lines. It’s also important to locate any underground utilities to avoid damage. Use chalk to mark where you’ll install the fence and confirm the layout with your neighbors to prevent future disputes. This step ensures your fence will be both legal and functional in the long run.

Step 2: Dig the Post Holes
Dig holes that are three times the diameter of your fence posts. For end (terminal) posts, aim for about seven inches deep, and for line posts, around five inches. Make sure the bottom of each hole is slightly wider than the top to allow for proper settling. These measurements help ensure stability and longevity for your fence structure.

Step 3: Set the Terminal Posts
Fill each terminal post hole with quick-dry concrete before inserting the post. Use a level to make sure each post is plumb as you pour the final layers of concrete. Slope the top of the concrete slightly away from the post to help water drain away, preventing erosion and damage. Let the concrete cure for at least two days before moving on to the next step.

Step 4: Install the Line Posts
Once the terminal posts are set, stretch a mason line four inches below the top of the terminal posts. This line will serve as a guide for the height of all line posts. Fill each hole with concrete and insert the posts one by one, adjusting their height to match the mason line. Use a level to keep each post straight and let the concrete dry for two days before continuing.

Step 5: Attach the Rails
Place tension bands over each terminal post—six bands for corner posts and three to four for others. Install rail caps along with the tension bands, tightening them just enough to hold in place. Secure a post cap on each terminal post and a looped cap on each line post. Thread a rail through each looped cap, cutting it as needed to fit. Adjust the rails into the terminal caps and tighten the tension bands for added stability.

Step 6: Hang the Chain Link Fabric
Unroll the chain link mesh outside the fence line. Insert a tension bar through the first few links and bolt it to the tension bands. Align the fabric so it overlaps the rail by about two inches. Roll the mesh to the next terminal post and insert another tension bar a few feet away. Attach a fence puller to both the tension bar and the terminal post, then tighten the fabric until it’s taut but not overly stretched. Add a second tension bar near the next terminal post, secure it to the tension bands, and remove the puller once everything is tight and properly aligned.
