If these factors aren’t properly addressed, pushing for extreme thinness can lead to serious issues like reduced durability and poor thermal management. Compromising on Durability Many superbooks use aluminum alloys for their casings, which are stronger than traditional plastics like ABS found in regular laptops. But even with metal, there’s a trade-off between weight and strength. To maintain structural integrity, a certain thickness or specific alloy composition is often necessary. Otherwise, the device may become fragile. A simple example is a soda can — made from aluminum, yet it can easily be crushed if not handled carefully. Some superbooks have already faced issues due to insufficient structural strength. For instance, users of the HP ENVY6 series reported visible warping on the screen edges when opening the laptop. This is a result of weak casing strength. Additionally, the flat top cover design of the ENVY6 series makes it more susceptible to damage, increasing the risk of screen cracks if not handled with care. Industry experts note that ultrabooks nearing critical thickness limits, such as those just over 10 mm, often face similar problems. While manufacturers attempt to reduce thickness by modifying shell designs, this can create hidden safety risks. To address this, using stronger materials like Corning Gorilla Glass or carbon fiber could help maintain both slimness and durability without sacrificing user safety. Thermal Management Challenges Samsung's 540U is a good example of how ultra-thinness can affect heat dissipation. Despite being only 16.6 mm thick, its cooling performance leaves much to be desired. Under full load, the temperature at the exhaust vent can reach up to 52.7°C, even in cooler weather. During summer, when ambient temperatures rise, this issue becomes even more pronounced, potentially affecting both user comfort and system stability. The problem stems from the limited internal space caused by the ultra-slim design. Reduced airflow, thinner fans, and less room for heat dissipation components all contribute to the challenge. Some superbooks still use dual-fan systems, but many rely on a flat layout to spread out heat sources, helping to prevent overheating and keeping the user’s hands comfortable during use. Impact on Battery Life When Intel first introduced the concept of superbooks, long battery life was an essential requirement alongside thinness and fast boot times. However, as manufacturers focused more on making devices lighter and thinner, battery life often took a backseat. Early superbooks typically offered 6–8 hours of use, but some ultra-thin models, like the Acer S7, struggled to exceed 4.5 hours under normal conditions. In power-intensive tasks, its battery life dropped to just 1.5 hours — worse than many traditional laptops. The issue with the Acer S7 was primarily due to its small 35WH battery, which occupied over half the internal space. To achieve its ultra-slim profile, the battery had to be compressed, reducing its capacity. As a result, the device couldn't deliver the long-lasting power users expected from a superbook. Experts believe that current battery technology isn’t capable of a major breakthrough, so increasing power density remains difficult. Compressing the battery size will inevitably lead to shorter usage times. Sacrificing battery life for ultra-thinness is seen as a misinterpretation of the original superbook vision, negatively impacting user experience and hindering future development in the category.
