In a groundbreaking move, the PSA Peugeot Citroën Group has unveiled an innovative technology that uses compressed air as a primary power source to reduce fuel consumption. This development marks a significant step towards more sustainable and cost-effective transportation solutions. The company showcased a prototype featuring an "air engine" that can cut gasoline costs by up to 45% for everyday drivers. In urban settings, where four out of five driving sessions may be powered by air, fuel savings could reach as high as 80%. The system integrates a conventional internal combustion engine with a specialized hydraulic press and an adaptive gearbox, allowing the vehicle to run on either compressed air, gasoline, or a combination of both. Aerodynamic operation is activated automatically when speeds drop below 43 mph (69.2 km/h), making it ideal for city driving. According to the company's projections, by 2020, cars equipped with this system could travel an average of 117 miles (188.29 km) on a single charge. This hybrid "mixed-gas" engine eliminates the need for expensive battery systems, making it a more affordable alternative to traditional hybrids. A car with this system is estimated to cost around £1,000 ($1,582.28) less than current hybrid models. For over two years, 100 top engineers and scientists have been working at the Peugeot Research Center in Vélez, southern Paris, to refine this revolutionary technology. Under the leadership of CEO Philippe Varan, the "Hybrid Air" system is a key part of the company’s strategy to revitalize its brand and regain market confidence. The system can be installed in any standard vehicle without altering its size or shape, preserving the design and functionality of existing models. Even the spare tire compartment remains unaffected. A spokesperson emphasized that these are not experimental or unrealistic concepts, but practical solutions for daily use. The company publicly displayed its prototype and plans to integrate the system into models like the 208 and 308. The technology allows the car to automatically recharge air during deceleration and braking, ensuring smooth performance even on long trips. Beyond aerodynamic vehicles, Peugeot is also launching new models like the 508 and C5, incorporating lightweight materials such as aluminum composites to further reduce fuel consumption by 20%. Innovations include electric power steering and low-friction tires to enhance efficiency. These advancements are set to roll out this year, starting with replacements for the Citroen C4 Picasso and Peugeot 308. At a recent event attended by French officials, the unveiling of the prototype sparked widespread interest and optimism.
