Liu Yanfen pioneered the use of Huangzhucao, a grass species previously not used for pig feeding, turning it into a valuable feed source. This not only reduces feeding costs but also contributes to environmental protection. By fermenting high-yield pastures during the summer, she ensures that pigs have access to nutritious feed throughout the winter. Additionally, she promotes the "pig-marsh-grass" model, which creates a closed-loop ecological system that enhances sustainability.
Adopting forage-based pig raising can cut feed costs by 10% to 30%. A 10% reduction in feed expenses could save over 300 yuan per pig, helping farmers maintain profitability even during market downturns. This cost-effective strategy is gaining popularity among farmers who are looking for ways to improve their bottom line without compromising on quality.
Through the integration of planting, pig farming, manure utilization, and grass feeding, Liu Yanfen’s eco-friendly system addresses the issue of competition between pigs and humans for grain resources. It also improves pork quality and food safety, making it a win-win solution for farmers, consumers, and the environment.
