Pig leaf feed simple processing method

Many leaves are rich in plant-based protein and a variety of essential nutrients that support the growth and development of pigs, making them a valuable resource for pig feed. Nature provides a wide range of leafy materials that can be used to supplement or even replace traditional feed sources. Commonly used leaves include those from locust trees, poplars, willows, eucalyptus, mulberry, camphor, pine, apple, pear, mountain plants, apricot, peach, grapes, persimmon, and jujube trees. In addition, the flowers of hedgehog and poplar trees also serve as nutritious feed options for pigs. Proper processing of these leaves not only enhances their taste but also significantly improves their digestibility, nutritional value, and overall utilization by the animals. One of the most effective methods is boiling. After harvesting tender leaves, they should be washed thoroughly with water. Then, they are placed into a tank or cement pool and boiled using warm water at a temperature of 80-100%. After boiling, the leaves are soaked in water for 2 to 4 hours. The amount of water should cover the leaves completely. However, when soaking certain leaves such as apricot, peach, willow, and mulberry leaves, it’s important to change the water several times to remove any bitterness. Once properly prepared, these leaves can be mixed directly into the pigs’ diet. Another popular method is drying. Fresh leaves are collected, dried in the sun or using mechanical dryers, and then crushed into smaller pieces. These processed leaves can be directly added to the pig feed. For example, locust, mulberry, and poplar leaves, along with some fruit tree leaves, are commonly used in this way. The recommended feeding rate is usually between 5% to 10% of the total feed mixture. This approach not only makes the feed more sustainable but also helps reduce feeding costs while maintaining nutritional quality. By utilizing these natural resources and applying simple yet effective processing techniques, farmers can enhance the efficiency of their pig farming operations while promoting environmentally friendly practices.
