On the following day, December 16, a reporter visited Luoyang Axis Technology Co., Ltd. to learn more about the company’s role in supporting China’s space missions. During the visit, technical experts shared insights into the importance of bearings in space technology and how they contribute to the success of projects like the Yutu lunar rover.
The steering mechanisms and other critical parts of Yutu were developed by Luoyang Axis Technology. In space, where there is no gravity, maintaining control of a satellite is crucial. Luo Wei, an assistant director at the company’s special bearing R&D department, explained that attitude control is one of the most important aspects of space missions. The bearings used in the gyro and reaction flywheel systems—key components of Yutu’s attitude control—are manufactured by the company.
Yutu’s power generation system also relies heavily on Luoyang’s high-quality bearings. Without these components, the rover would not be able to function properly or carry out its scientific tasks. The gyro acts as a sensor that helps determine the satellite’s position and direction, similar to a compass, while the reaction flywheel adjusts the satellite’s orientation. Together, they allow the rover to move and explore the Moon effectively.
