China's most stringent national standards for pesticide residues will be officially implemented on August 1.
Pesticide residues pose a serious threat to public health, and their dangers should be clearly understood by everyone. Excessive exposure to these chemicals can lead to both acute and chronic poisoning, with severe cases even endangering lives. In response to growing concerns, the Ministry of Agriculture and the National Health and Family Planning Commission have released an updated version of the "Maximum Residue Limits of Pesticides in Foods" (GB2763-2014). This new standard sets 3,650 limit values for 387 different pesticides across 284 types of food, marking a significant expansion compared to previous regulations. It includes 65 more pesticides, 43 additional food categories, and 1,357 more residue limits, covering most of the pesticides commonly used in agriculture and the foods that people consume regularly. The revised standard will take effect on August 1st this year.
To illustrate the stricter requirements, let’s look at cucumbers. Previously, the limit for chlorpyrifos was set between 0.1 and 0.5 mg/kg in 13 monitoring standards. Under the new rule, the maximum allowable level of chlorpyrifos has been reduced to just 0.1 mg/kg. This shows how much more rigorous the new guidelines are.
The updated standard places particular emphasis on fresh produce such as fruits and vegetables. A total of 2,495 residue limits have been established for 115 vegetable types and 85 fruit types, representing an increase of 904 items over the previous standard. For the first time, it also sets specific limits for primary processed products like fruit juice, preserved fruits, and dried fruits. As the only mandatory national standard for pesticide residue monitoring in China, this new regulation is being referred to as “China’s strictest national standard for pesticide residues.†With these changes, consumers can now have greater confidence in the safety of the food they eat.
