Apple may build 200 million sapphire mobile phone screens

On February 7th Beijing Time, Mark Gurman of 9to5Mac reported that the next-generation iPhone could feature a scratch-resistant sapphire glass screen. According to the report, the sapphire production facility owned by GT Advanced in Mesa, Arizona, is expected to supply Apple with between 100 to 200 million sapphire glass screens for future iPhones. Gurman collaborated with Matt Margolis, an analyst and investor at GAdvance, who has previously written about sapphire glass technology. Margolis emphasized the strategic importance of sapphire glass for Apple, noting that it would allow the company to fully leverage its acquisition of Authentec for $358 million. He explained, “Sapphire screens will enable Apple to implement Touch ID across the entire display, not just on the home button. This advancement could significantly enhance user experience and security. Additionally, sapphire is the second hardest material after diamonds, making it highly resistant to scratches and ideal for protecting the device’s screen.” This development suggests Apple is pushing forward with more durable and advanced display technologies, aligning with its long-term strategy of innovation and user-centric design. With sapphire glass, the company could further differentiate its products in a competitive market while improving overall device longevity.
