Ultra-efficient side-emitting solar cell architecture was successfully developed
Researchers at Ben Gurion University in Israel’s Negev region have developed a groundbreaking new design for solar cells. This innovative approach to concentrating solar cells boasts a unique feature—its ability to capture sunlight from the sides, significantly enhancing solar energy conversion efficiency to levels rivaling the best photovoltaic panels available today.
Attached below is an image showcasing this remarkable advancement. As you can see, the design of these solar cells allows them to achieve conversion efficiencies surpassing 40%, a feat made possible by overcoming several traditional limitations associated with conventional solar technologies.

Professor Jeffrey Gordon from BGU's Jacob Blaustein Institutes for Desert Research explained, "Typically, concentrator solar cells rely on stacked materials that are interconnected, which presents significant challenges in terms of both production complexity and efficiency. Our newly developed concentrator photovoltaic cells are entirely self-contained, solving many of these issues and achieving unprecedented levels of efficiency."
This novel architecture also opens up possibilities for using materials like silicon, which were once thought unsuitable for highly concentrated solar applications. Additionally, it minimizes internal resistance within the cell by illuminating its edges, further boosting performance.
The result? A peak cell-level efficiency increase exceeding 10,000 times compared to existing designs. This breakthrough marks a major leap forward in harnessing renewable energy sources.
As we face increasing global demands for sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels, initiatives like those led by Prof. Gordon and his team at BGU are crucial. Their work not only pushes scientific boundaries but also inspires hope for a cleaner, greener future. It’s exciting to think about how such innovations could shape the world for generations to come!
