Typically, hydroelectric power is generated by building dams on rivers. However, engineers in Hong Kong have taken a creative approach and developed an innovative device that can generate electricity from the very water pipes that run through the city. Hong Kong has an extensive network of water pipes, covering a total of 7,800 kilometers. To ensure water quality remains up to standard, water companies install monitoring systems at various points throughout the network. These devices require a continuous power supply, which led engineers from the Department of Building Equipment Engineering at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University to think outside the box. They came up with a solution: a small generator that harnesses energy directly from the flowing water in the pipes. The device features a unique spherical turbine designed to fit perfectly within the circular shape of the water pipes. It has a central hollow structure, with eight rotating vanes arranged around the edge. The large tilt angle of each vane ensures minimal resistance to water flow, making the system highly efficient. This design also reduces turbulence and energy loss, maximizing the amount of usable energy extracted from the water current. The generator is surprisingly effective—each unit can produce 80 volts, enough to power four fluorescent lamps. If deployed across all suitable locations in Hong Kong, the system could generate approximately 700 kWh of electricity annually. That’s equivalent to reducing carbon emissions by about 560 kilograms per year, making it both an eco-friendly and practical solution. This innovation highlights how smart engineering can turn everyday infrastructure into a source of clean energy.
