Hong Kong uses water pipes to generate electricity

While dams are the traditional method for generating hydroelectric power, engineers in Hong Kong have taken a creative and unconventional approach. They've developed a unique device that harnesses energy from the city's water pipes to generate electricity. This innovation could be a game-changer for urban energy solutions.

Hong Kong has an extensive network of water pipes, covering around 7,800 kilometers. To ensure water quality, the local water company installs monitoring systems at various points along the pipeline. These devices require a continuous power supply, which can be costly and environmentally taxing. In response, researchers from the Department of Building Equipment Engineering at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University designed a system that generates electricity directly from the flow of water within the pipes.

The device features a spherical turbine with a hollow center and eight rotating vanes arranged around its surface. The vanes are angled in such a way that they minimize resistance to water flow, ensuring efficient energy capture without disrupting the system. This design not only reduces turbulence but also maximizes energy conversion while maintaining the integrity of the water flow.

Each unit is capable of producing up to 80 volts—enough to power four fluorescent lights. If deployed across all relevant locations in Hong Kong, the system could generate approximately 700 kWh of electricity annually. That’s equivalent to cutting down about 560 kilograms of CO₂ emissions each year. It's a small but impactful step toward sustainable urban development.

This technology shows how cities can rethink their infrastructure to become more self-sufficient and eco-friendly. By turning everyday elements like water pipes into power sources, Hong Kong is setting a new standard for green engineering.
