Our country overcomes the world problem of lignite application

Recently, the Shaanxi Yulin Western Coal Technology Research Center has made a groundbreaking achievement by successfully producing high-concentration coal water slurry for gasification using lignite from Hulunbeier City in Inner Mongolia. The center utilized its self-developed low-rank coal fine dry powder technology and managed to create a coal water slurry with a concentration of 63.8% on an in-house industrial pilot line. The slurry exhibited a viscosity of only 1200 cPa, marking a significant step forward in the utilization of lignite in the coal chemical industry.

Historically, the application of lignite in coal chemical processes has been a global challenge. Most industrial coal wet-process slurries have not exceeded a concentration of 48%. Many countries have attempted to improve the quality of cracking using lignite, but these efforts have often failed due to high costs and technical limitations. The Western Coal Technology Research Center is now focusing on the vast brown coal reserves in Inner Mongolia, which amount to nearly 100 billion tons, to develop high-concentration coal water slurry technology specifically for low-rank coal. This technology has already passed industrial pilot tests using lignite from various regions across China, achieving consistent concentrations above 60%, matching or even surpassing those of clean coal-based slurries.

To achieve this, the research center employed both physical and chemical methods to break down the water-containing functional groups in lignite, preventing it from absorbing water and making it more fluid. They also used the natural moisture in brown coal to prepare the slurry, effectively solving the issue of secondary water absorption. Additionally, new chemical additives were developed to enhance the pulping process, while optimized particle size grading improved the packing density of the coal particles. The entire process is streamlined, efficient, and fully automated, resulting in a cost of just 98 yuan per ton of pulp. The effective gas yield from this process reaches up to 73%, making it highly competitive.

Datang Hulunbeier Chemical Fertilizer Co., Ltd. previously adopted the first domestic brown coal wet method for preparing coal water slurry, but the coal concentration remained at only 48%. This led to high coal consumption per ton of synthetic ammonia and no economic benefit. According to company estimates, if the coal slurry concentration could be increased to 60%, coal consumption would significantly decrease, along with oxygen and power usage. Li Baoqing, a leading expert in coal chemistry, believes that widespread adoption of this technology could generate as much as 20 billion yuan in benefits for the country. (Reporter: Hu Zuo)
