2013 Guangzhou mattress opening soon, one hundred companies lead the health and environmental protection mattress
Sleep is a fundamental part of our daily lives, with people spending about half their day resting. According to a global survey conducted by the World Health Organization among 25,916 patients across 14 countries and 15 regions, 27% of individuals experience sleep disturbances. In the United States, insomnia rates range from 32% to 50%, while in the UK it's between 10% and 14%. Japan reports 20%, France 30%, and China has an alarming 38.2% incidence rate among adults, with the elderly suffering at a staggering 60%. Given China’s massive population, it now holds the world’s largest number of insomniacs.
This growing awareness of sleep health has led to a surge in demand for safe and healthy mattress products. In the first seven months of this year alone, the mattress industry saw a 64.2% increase in such products compared to the previous year—a figure that reflects a major shift in consumer priorities. Experts believe this rise is largely due to heightened concerns over product safety, prompting both consumers and businesses to focus more on quality and health. As a result, the mattress industry is moving toward a more sustainable and positive growth path.
Despite a challenging market environment in 2012, when the furniture and home furnishings sector faced its worst downturn in a decade, the Chinese sleep industry continued to grow. By September 2012, the market size had reached 120 billion yuan, maintaining a high-speed growth trajectory. The mattress industry has become a key driver in China’s health consumption sector. In 2011, the mattress output value exceeded $20 billion, accounting for 6.5% of global furniture production. China is now the second-largest mattress market globally, with a 24% annual growth rate. After the 2012 slowdown, exports began to recover, showing signs of a strong rebound in 2013.
At the start of this year, China’s total exports of textile raw materials and products reached $123.26 billion, marking a 12% increase compared to the same period last year. This indicates a strong performance in the furniture and household goods sector. Experts predict that as foreign markets recover, 2013 will be a pivotal year for the mattress industry.
Recently, we spoke with Mr. Lu, chairman of the 2013 Guangzhou International Mattress Exhibition. He emphasized that adjusting business strategies according to industry trends has become a common practice. Today, fewer companies focus solely on domestic or international markets; instead, many are combining both. To support this shift, the 2013 Guangzhou International Mattress Exhibition aims to provide a one-stop trade platform, expanding its reach through multiple channels and actively connecting with professional buyers worldwide. Several foreign media outlets have already been engaged, and efforts are underway to promote the event internationally. For instance, a Pakistani agent is being recruited, and the Indian Mattress Exhibition is assisting with on-site promotion. Additionally, the Italian Sleep Association has expressed strong support and plans to bring members to the event.
The exhibition will also introduce a new forum focused on the development of the healthy sleep industry, promoting the concepts of "health, safety, and environmental protection." Educational activities, including sleep knowledge lectures, explanations of new sleep products, and bed cushion maintenance sessions, will enrich the event and attract more public attention. Furthermore, the exhibition will feature a brand evaluation segment, where awards will be given based on contributions to the industry. Unlike traditional awards, these will be judged from three perspectives: professional, media, and public, ensuring fairness and transparency. The award ceremony will take place at the peak of the exhibition, aiming to generate excitement and recognition for the winning companies.
2014 marks a new beginning for the mattress industry, and the Guangzhou Mattress Exhibition will play a crucial role in this recovery.
