Our country overcomes the world problem of lignite application

Recently, the Shaanxi Yulin Western Coal Technology Research Center made a significant breakthrough by successfully producing high-concentration coal water slurry for gasification using lignite from Hulunbeier City in Inner Mongolia. The center utilized its self-developed low-rank coal fine dry powder technology and managed to create a coal water slurry with a concentration of 63.8% on an in-house industrial pilot production line. The slurry had a viscosity of just 1200 cPa, marking a major milestone in coal utilization. This world-first production line has now turned the application of lignite in the coal chemical industry into a tangible reality.

Lignite has long posed challenges in the coal chemical industry due to its high moisture content and poor flowability. Currently, the maximum concentration of industrial coal wet-process slurry is limited to around 48%. Many countries have attempted to improve the quality of lignite for cracking processes, but most efforts have been hindered by high costs. The Western Coal Technology Research Center has focused on the vast brown coal reserves in Inner Mongolia, which amount to nearly 100 billion tons. They have developed a high-concentration coal water slurry technology that uses low-rank coal fine dry powder for gasification. Pilot tests have been conducted on lignite from various regions across China, achieving consistent coal water slurry concentrations above 60%, surpassing even those of clean coal-based slurries.

To overcome the challenges of lignite, the research center employed physical and chemical methods to break down the water-containing functional groups within the coal, preventing it from absorbing excessive moisture while still allowing it to be fluid. They also used the natural moisture in brown coal to prepare the high-concentration slurry, effectively addressing the issue of secondary water absorption. Additionally, new chemical additives were developed to enhance the pulping process, and optimized particle size grading was implemented to increase the packing ratio. The entire process is simple, efficient, and fully automated, with a cost of only 98 yuan per ton of pulp. The effective gas yield reached as high as 73%, demonstrating the technology's potential for large-scale implementation.

Datang Hulunbeier Chemical Fertilizer Co., Ltd. previously adopted the domestic brown coal wet method for preparing coal water slurry, but the coal concentration remained at just 48%, resulting in high coal consumption and no economic benefits. The company estimates that increasing the slurry concentration to 60% could significantly reduce coal usage, along with oxygen and power consumption. Li Baoqing, a renowned coal chemical expert, believes that if this technology is widely adopted, it could generate up to 20 billion yuan in national benefits. (Reporter: Hu Zuo)
