Five avoidance of application of microbial pesticides
When using microbial live pesticides, it's important to follow certain guidelines to maximize their effectiveness. One key point is to avoid mixing them with fungicides. For example, *Aspergillus* species, which are used as fungal insecticides, work through the action of live spores of *Ophiocordyceps sinensis*. These spores infect pests like aphids and cause their death, leading to continuous infection and a significant reduction in pest populations. However, since these are living organisms, if they are mixed with a bactericide, the spores will be killed, and the pesticide will lose its effectiveness.
Secondly, it’s best to avoid applying the pesticide during dry or hot weather. Applying it between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm on a sunny day is not recommended because high temperatures and low humidity can reduce its performance. The ideal time for application is when the air is more humid—such as after a cloudy day, following rain, or early in the morning. This helps maintain the viability of the spores and improves the overall control effect.
Third, you should also avoid applying the pesticide just before heavy rain. Spores are highly sensitive to water, and heavy rainfall can wash them away from the target area, reducing their effectiveness. However, light rain that occurs a few hours after application (around 5–6 hours) can actually enhance the results. Light rain helps the spores germinate more effectively, and once the pests consume them, their death happens faster. Therefore, checking the weather forecast before application is crucial for optimal results.
Fourth, it’s important to avoid applying the pesticide in very cold conditions. Some farmers may overlook environmental factors and apply the product during winter or early spring, when temperatures are low. This can lead to poor control outcomes. Microbial live pesticides require warmer temperatures to work effectively. Studies have shown that the efficacy of these products is 1–2 times higher at temperatures between 25–30°C compared to 10–15°C.
Lastly, strong sunlight should be avoided. It’s best not to apply the pesticide during midday when the sun is at its strongest. Ultraviolet rays from the sun can damage the spores and even deform the parasporal crystals, reducing their ability to infect pests. To minimize this risk, it’s better to apply the pesticide in the late afternoon, after 4:00 pm, or on overcast days. This ensures the spores remain viable and effective for longer.
