As one of the world’s largest manufacturing countries and a major consumer of machine tools, China currently has around 8 million machine tools in operation. It has been the top global consumer of machine tools for seven consecutive years. According to an international 3% elimination rate, nearly 240,000 machines are retired annually, accounting for about half of the domestic production of new equipment. If the castings such as beds and columns from these machines are fully recycled and repaired, energy consumption can be reduced by approximately 60%, costs cut by 70%, and pollutant emissions dropped by over 80%, enabling a more sustainable and circular production model.
The remanufacturing industry is now moving toward large-scale industrialization. Three companies from Hubei Province—Huazhong Autocontrol, Wuzhong, and Maxima—have been selected as part of the first batch of national remanufacturing pilots for electromechanical products, playing a key role in promoting the growth of the local remanufacturing sector. Among them, Huazhong Automation and Wuzhong Group specialize in machine tool remanufacturing, while Maxima focuses on engineering machinery. Their pilot efforts were highly praised by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology yesterday.
Gao Dongsheng, deputy director of the Department of Energy Conservation at the Ministry, emphasized at the meeting that after several years of trials, machine tool remanufacturing needs to expand and transition toward full-scale industrialization. Currently, tax incentives for remanufacturing enterprises are being considered, which will provide significant benefits and support for the industry's long-term development.
