Big data increasingly highlights the important value

Big data is playing an increasingly vital role in the modern information society, reshaping commercial landscapes and driving the evolution of consumer business models. However, the challenges brought by massive, unstructured, and fast-paced data have placed significant pressure on traditional data centers. At the "2013 Information and Communication Industry Data Center and Big Data Summit," experts emphasized the urgent need to rebuild data centers for the big data era. Hosted by the People's Posts and Telecommunications Newspapers and the China Information Industry Network, and organized by Epwer, the summit highlighted the importance of redefining the business ecosystem to adapt to this new digital landscape. The value of big data lies in its ability to fuel a new engine for information consumption. As data becomes the core asset of enterprises—often compared to the oil and minerals of the digital age—its significance continues to grow. According to Qu Ying, Vice President of the China Division at NEC IT, global data volume surged from 2.7ZB in 2012 to over 40ZB by 2020, a staggering 14-fold increase. In China alone, data volume is expected to exceed 8ZB, growing at a rate far surpassing the global average. DCCI Internet Data Center reports that 60 Instagram photos are uploaded every second, 60 hours of YouTube videos are shared each minute, and search engines generate 35TB of logs daily. The total amount of data created so far exceeds 5 exabytes, with more data generated in the past three years than in the previous 40,000. Chen Luying, CTO of Beijing Broadcom High-tech Development Co., Ltd., emphasizes that data is now a critical corporate asset, and control over it determines market influence. Companies with strong data analysis capabilities and access to high-quality data will dominate the big data industry. Wu Suining, editor-in-chief of the People’s Posts and Telecommunications News, highlights how big data has transformed the business ecosystem. With the rise of the internet and big data, nearly every aspect of human activity is being redefined. Operators must treat data resources as critically as network and user resources, tapping into their commercial potential to become true big data operators. Xie Yuqi, Director of the Policy and Standards Division at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, points out that big data will drive the expansion of information consumption. By leveraging data insights, governments and businesses can make more accurate decisions, innovate in social management, and deliver personalized services. Examples include traffic planning, epidemic monitoring, and real-time advertising, all of which enhance the attractiveness of information consumption. However, big data also presents major challenges for building green, smart, and secure data centers. Energy consumption in data centers has grown rapidly, with global data center energy use increasing by 56% over the past five years. In China, the situation is even more pronounced. Chi Jiuhong, General Manager of Huawei’s Data Center Infrastructure Product Line, explains that raising data center temperatures from 25°C to 27°C can significantly improve cooling efficiency and reduce energy use. Google, for instance, uses natural cooling in half of its global data centers, achieving a PUE below 1.2. He Baohong, Director of the Internet Research Center at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, notes that data centers account for 1-1.5% of global energy consumption. In China, this figure ranges between 2.5% and 3%. With data center traffic expected to grow by 7-10 times in the next five years, energy efficiency will be a key focus. The government has introduced green data center standards to promote sustainable development, though currently no 5A-rated green data centers exist in China. Xie Yuqi also addressed issues of overbuilding and inefficiency in data centers globally. To address these, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, along with other agencies, issued guidelines promoting resource-based, regionally coordinated, and secure data center layouts. These measures have helped industry players better plan data center construction and conserve resources. Experts also warned about the technical challenges posed by big data, including storage scalability, transmission bottlenecks, and the need for advanced computing and networking solutions. Xie Jun, Chief Architect at Cisco China Data Center, emphasized the shift toward cloud computing and the need for borderless networks and SDN support to handle the growing demand for dynamic resource allocation. Data security remains a pressing concern. Cheng Wenjie, Technical Manager at CheckPoint, pointed out that the move to cloud computing and virtualization introduces new risks, making it harder to define security boundaries. Ensuring the safety of cloud platforms during migration and operation is a complex challenge. Finally, the development of a big data ecosystem requires strong planning, data standardization, and institutional reforms. Wu emphasized the need to break down data silos and promote open information sharing. Operators, with their vast user data, are well-positioned to lead in big data applications. China Telecom, China Mobile, and China Unicom are actively investing in data centers and cloud infrastructure to support future growth and innovation.
