2A12 aluminum alloy heat treatment specification

On the China Aluminum Industry Network, different heat treatment processes are commonly used to optimize the properties of aluminum alloys. Here are some typical procedures:

(1) Homogenization annealing involves heating the material to a temperature range of 480 to 495°C, followed by an insulation period of 12 to 14 hours. After that, the material is cooled slowly in the furnace to ensure uniform microstructure and reduce internal stresses.

(2) Complete annealing is performed at temperatures between 390 and 430°C, with holding times ranging from 30 to 120 minutes. Once the process is complete, the material is cooled in the furnace until it reaches 300°C, after which it is air-cooled to room temperature. This method helps improve ductility and relieve residual stresses.

(3) Rapid annealing is a quicker alternative, with heating temperatures set between 350 and 370°C. The holding time varies from 30 to 120 minutes, and the material is cooled in air. This technique is often used when time efficiency is a priority without compromising too much on mechanical properties.

(4) Quenching and aging is a two-step process. First, the material is quenched at 495 to 505°C using water cooling to rapidly lower the temperature. Then, artificial aging is carried out at 185 to 195°C for 6 to 12 hours, followed by air cooling. Natural aging can also be applied, where the material is left at room temperature for about 96 hours to achieve further strengthening through precipitation.

These methods are widely used in the aluminum industry to tailor the mechanical properties of alloys for specific applications, ensuring optimal performance and durability.
