U.S. Photovoltaic Manufacturing Alliance and NREL Collaborate on Thin Film Technology

The Photovoltaic Manufacturing Consortium (PVMC) and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) have recently announced a strategic partnership aimed at accelerating the advancement of thin-film photovoltaic technology. This collaboration is expected to play a key role in driving innovation and improving efficiency in the solar energy sector. The agreement will cover a wide range of areas, including product development, metrology, reliability testing, module and battery manufacturing, advanced testing methodologies, material analysis, and modeling. By integrating these elements, the two organizations aim to create a more robust and scalable framework for thin-film technology. Pradeep Haldar, Chief Operating and Technical Officer of PVMC and Vice President of Clean Energy Projects, emphasized that this is an open and flexible collaboration. "We are not setting any restrictions," he said. "We will expand the scope as needed, and both PVMC and NREL will invest or co-invest based on specific projects. Additional funding will also be sought from other sources." He added that the initial objective is to establish a state-of-the-art thin-film manufacturing facility and conduct critical testing and reliability studies at the US Photovoltaic Manufacturing Alliance. These efforts are designed to meet the goals outlined for the first two years of the initiative. While the exact financial details of the partnership remain undisclosed, a spokesperson noted that both parties will leverage existing resources to meet industry demand more efficiently. This approach is intended to speed up progress and deliver better results. The U.S. Department of Energy’s SunShot program has set an ambitious target: to reduce the installation cost of thin-film photovoltaic systems by 75% over the next decade. This partnership aligns with that vision, supporting the broader goal of making solar energy more affordable and accessible. NREL, which is funded by taxpayers, is working closely with the US Photovoltaic Manufacturing Alliance. This alliance includes representatives from the photovoltaic industry, academic institutions, government agencies, and experts from the Nanoscience and Engineering College at the State University of New York. In a related development, the US Photovoltaic Manufacturing Alliance recently signed a memorandum of understanding with SEMI, the electronics manufacturing industry association, to develop a shared roadmap for thin-film technology. This move signals growing momentum in the field and highlights the importance of cross-sector collaboration. This partnership represents a significant step forward in the evolution of thin-film solar technology, with the potential to reshape the future of renewable energy in the United States and beyond.
