Sharp solar cells refresh the world's highest conversion efficiency

Solar cells developed by Sharp, featuring a three-layer light-absorbing structure, have recently set a new global record for conversion efficiency. By fine-tuning the composition of the bottom layer, the company has enhanced the cell's ability to capture sunlight across a broader spectrum, significantly boosting its performance. This achievement was verified by AIST (the Japan Institute of Industrial Technology), one of the leading public solar cell testing institutions worldwide. The cell achieved an impressive 37.9% efficiency over an area of about 1 square centimeter. The new solar cell is called the "Compound 3-Junction" and was developed under Japan’s NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization) initiative for "Innovative Photovoltaic Power Generation Technology." In laboratory settings, this 37.9% efficiency marks the highest ever recorded for non-concentrating solar cells. Previously, the same type of cell reached 35.8% in 2009, 36.9% in 2011, and 37.7% in 2012. This latest breakthrough further solidifies Sharp’s leadership in photovoltaic innovation. The compound solar cell features multiple light-absorbing layers made from multi-element compounds such as indium and gallium. Specifically, the bottom layer uses indium gallium arsenide, which Sharp optimized to efficiently absorb light at various wavelengths. This design allows the cell to capture more energy from the sun, improving overall efficiency. This three-layer configuration enables efficient light absorption and charge collection. Sharp started developing these high-efficiency solar cells back in 2000, aiming to create lighter, more durable, and highly efficient solar panels suitable for space applications. Moving forward, the company plans to leverage these advancements for broader commercial use and real-world implementation.
