MDF basic classification

MDF, or Medium Density Fiberboard, is a type of engineered wood product made by breaking down hardwood or softwood into wood fibers, then combining them with wax and resin under high pressure and heat. It is classified based on its density into high-density MDF, medium-density MDF, and low-density MDF. Specifically, medium-density MDF has a density ranging from 550 kg to 880 kg per cubic meter, while high-density MDF has a density of 880 kg/m³ or higher. This material is widely used in furniture manufacturing, cabinetry, and interior design due to its smooth surface and uniform texture.

Standard sizes for MDF boards are commonly 1220 x 2440 mm and 1525 x 2440 mm, making it versatile for various applications. In terms of thickness, MDF is available in multiple options, including 3mm, 5mm, 9mm, 12mm, 15mm, 16mm, 18mm, 20mm, 25mm, and 30mm, allowing for flexibility depending on the project requirements.

According to the Chinese national standard GB/T 11718, MDF is further categorized into three main types: ordinary MDF, furniture-grade MDF, and load-bearing MDF. Each type is designed for specific uses, with load-bearing MDF being suitable for structural applications that require greater strength and durability.
