In the future, an “energy hood†can be set to protect the city from earthquakes.
According to recent foreign media reports, a French research team has successfully validated their theory through experiments, demonstrating that seismic energy can be redirected away from the most vulnerable parts of a city. Although the project is still in its early stages, the findings suggest that this approach could one day be used to protect urban areas from earthquake damage.
During the experiment, researchers created a network of 5-meter-deep cylindrical holes in the soil and used seismograph sensors to track how seismic waves moved through the area. As predicted, the sound waves resonated within the pattern of the holes due to acoustic properties, causing them to refract around the structures rather than pass through them.

The team explained: “At the micro and nano scale, engineered materials have a significant and lasting impact on photonics and phononics. At larger scales—decimeters and meters—engineered soil can interact with seismic waves, altering their behavior and overall properties.â€
They hope that civil engineers will eventually use this technology to redirect earthquakes entirely around cities, creating safe zones by dispersing seismic energy. The researchers stated: “Our measurements of particle velocity show that seismic energy distribution has changed. For complex natural materials like soil, large-scale testing is essential to confirm practical feasibility and real-world applications in urban infrastructure.â€
The team believes their experiments are a promising first step in understanding the interaction between human engineering and natural forces. However, as *Scientific American* points out, there are still many challenges to overcome. “Not all energy can be avoided—it must go somewhere. We need better ways to absorb or redirect the massive energy released during a major earthquake,†the publication noted.
