How to get state support for new product development

**Abstract** Dai Hongjun, Chairman of the Expert Committee of China Abrasives Association, explains why enterprises should pay attention to applying for national research and new product development projects. Some companies may not take this seriously, thinking that it’s too time-consuming or that they won’t get much support. Others might feel discouraged after years of effort with little reward. However, despite these challenges, there are several compelling reasons why businesses should actively engage in this process. First, applying for national-level projects helps companies build a structured R&D team. This not only improves their technical capabilities but also enhances their overall innovation capacity. Second, government-funded projects come with strict evaluations and oversight, which pushes companies to refine their management systems and ensure product quality. Third, engaging with government bodies allows companies to stay informed about policy changes and industry trends, helping them align their strategies with national priorities. Lastly, working with research institutions provides access to cutting-edge knowledge and technologies, further boosting product development. When it comes to applying for funding, the state allocates over 100 billion yuan annually to support innovation. These funds are distributed through various ministries, including the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Ministry of Commerce, and Ministry of Science and Technology. Provincial and local governments also offer support in different forms. In recent years, the management of these funds has improved significantly. The focus is now on supporting major projects that impact the national economy and public welfare, especially those involving collaboration between universities, research institutes, and enterprises. If a project aligns with national goals and has a strong R&D team, it is more likely to receive funding. The application process typically includes four steps: project collection, preparation guidance, submission, and review. Companies must work together with multiple stakeholders—universities, research institutions, and end-users—to increase their chances of success. Once selected, the company gains visibility, credibility, and market opportunities, all of which contribute to long-term growth. In conclusion, while the process can be challenging, the benefits of securing national research funding are substantial. Leaders should look beyond short-term gains and invest in long-term development. By consistently engaging with the government and applying for scientific research projects, companies can continuously improve and eventually achieve significant success.
