China's first segmented wind turbine blade to complete on-hook test

Recently, the first domestic segmented wind turbine blade developed by the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Baoding Huayi Wind Power Blade Research and Development Co., Ltd. (National Experimental Center for Wind Power Grid Integration) (Zhangbei Experimental Base) The on-hook running test was completed to achieve the desired goal. This is another stage of achievement of the project based on the completion of the preliminary limit load test.

Segmented wind turbine blades consist of two or more parts that are independent of each other. Adjacent components are bonded or mechanically connected together to achieve blade aerodynamic and structural functions; the introduction of connections will inevitably increase the quality of the blades. It will cause the discontinuous change of the structural stiffness; the change of the structural characteristics of the blade will further affect its dynamic response and aerodynamic performance under the external load. Therefore, the on-hook test of the segmented wind turbine blade is a necessary step for evaluating the performance matching of the blade and the wind turbine, the aerodynamic performance of the blade, the stability of the aeroelasticity, and the structural reliability.

In addition, assembly adaptability, structural integrity, and environmental protection of segmented blades are important aspects of segmented blade design and commercial application. On-site testing provides segmented blades with true load and environmental conditions, enabling comprehensive test segmentation. The structural design performance of the connection is good and bad. Compared to integrated blades, on-hook testing of segmented blades is particularly important.

During the on-hook running test, the wind turbines and segmented blades operated smoothly, withstanding temperature changes from 20° to -20°, strong winds above category 6 and severe weather such as heavy snowfall, heavy fog, heavy rain, and frost. No visible damage was seen at the blade and segmented joints. Through this test, the power characteristics of the segmented blades and the dynamic characteristics of the wind turbine were obtained, and the overall performance of the segmented blades and the reliability and environmental adaptability of the joints were verified.

Segmented wind turbine blade is an effective way to solve the long blade transportation and manufacturing problems. Foreign countries have carried out exploration and research in this field since the 1980s. In recent years, with the continuous advancement of technology and the long-term application of long-term blades, the long-blade transport problem has become more prominent. The increased cost of segmented blades has enabled effective control. The technical breakthroughs in segmented blade technology have made breakthroughs, and commercial applications have gradually matured. Several models have been used for on-hook testing and small-batch commercial installations, but the key technologies and detailed structures involved in segmented blades have not been reported. China's wind power companies have shown strong interest in segmented wind power blades, but it is rare to carry out substantial research and application. The power load center in the southern China wind site has become a hot spot for domestic wind power installations. In these areas, the road conditions are complex and the terrain is rough and uneven. It is also a typical low wind speed zone. This provides excellent application places for segmented blades and has a good market prospect.

The National Energy Wind Blade Research and Development (Experimental) Center of the Institute of Engineering Thermophysics was the first in China to carry out basic research on large-scale segmented wind turbine blades and was committed to overcome the reliability and adaptability of blade segment joints and the quality control of segmented blades. Problems such as the realization of low cost, high reliability, low maintenance cycles and high efficiency of segmented blades.

Baoding Huayi Wind Turbine Blade Research & Development Co., Ltd., with its mature experience and technical advantages in wind turbine blade design, technology, tooling and manufacturing of large-scale commercial composite materials, has achieved a number of innovations in process, manufacturing and assembly for the project. Smooth implementation provides strong support. In addition, the on-hook testing of the segmented wind turbine blades was fully supported by the National Energy Large Wind Power Grid-connected System R&D (Experimental) Center and other units.

This research was funded by the National Science and Technology Support Program, and a number of technological innovations have filled the gaps in related fields. It has applied for 8 national patents for invention and authorized 5 items. Up to now, the project undertaking unit has completed the design of blade section connection configuration, connection performance evaluation and process feasibility study, blade segment technology and assembly experiment research, segmented blade connection performance analysis, testing and full-size segmented design, trial production And limit load test. The successful completion of on-hook testing led to a major step toward commercial application of segmented wind blade technology developed independently by our country and with independent intellectual property rights.
