High-end market competition is weak
Since the beginning of the new century, with the large-scale transfer of manufacturing in developed countries to China, the domestic manufacturing industry has also accelerated the pace of technological transformation, so domestic CNC machine tools have begun to enter the manufacturing field. A sharp contradiction quickly emerged from the surface: advanced CNC machine tools, equipped with advanced domestic tools, had to be equipped with "foreign knife." After years of hard work, domestically produced high-efficiency tools have begun to enter this field, but their share is less than 20%. For example, in 2008, China's tool consumption was 29 billion yuan (about 4 billion US dollars), of which imported tools reached 10 billion yuan (about 1.4 billion US dollars), and the market share exceeded 1/3. Especially since the beginning of the 21st century, the consumption of imported tools has increased by more than 30% per year, exceeding the average growth rate of domestically produced tools. Domestically produced tools are being pushed by the steps of imported tools in the high-end market. The main reason is that domestically produced tools have a large gap with developed countries in terms of product structure and quality.

Domestic tools are mainly used for non-critical parts and rough and semi-finishing processes. Compared with foreign products, in addition to the large gap in cutting performance indicators, the bigger problem is that the quality is unstable, unreliable, and the product performance is highly dispersed.
A person in charge of the China National Machinery Industry Metal Cutting Tool Technology Association believes that the main problem facing Chinese tool companies is the low level of technology and technology. At this stage, cemented carbide tools have dominated the tool type in developed countries, with a proportion of up to 70%. The proportion of high-speed steel tools has now fallen below 30%. At present, the annual sales of China's knives is about 14.5 billion yuan, of which the proportion of cemented carbide tools is less than 25%, but China's tool companies blindly and mass-produce high-speed steel knives and some low-grade standard knives, with high add-on The high-end tool market with high value and high-tech content has been handed over to foreign companies.
Second is the low added value of the product. Of the 16,500 tons of cemented carbide produced in China, 4,500 tons are used in the production of cutting tools, which is equivalent in quantity to Japan. However, the value of the tool is only 800 million US dollars, far less than Japan's 2.5 billion US dollars, which fully shows that the overall production efficiency of domestic cemented carbide high efficiency tools is still quite different from that of foreign countries.

Seeking breakthroughs in many efforts

Multinational companies, such as Germany's Xiongke, Japan's Jiejie, Switzerland's Unimog and other tool manufacturers, have accumulated rich production experience in the long history of development, and their service forms surpass the primary sales stage of only providing customers with tools. According to the problems encountered by the customers in the production process, timely solutions are proposed. This advanced form of integrating sales into the production process of enterprises has become the usual sales method for foreign companies. However, due to the inadequacy of services, some Chinese companies are not able to win the favor of customers despite their “large volume”.
Liu Gang, director of the Shanghai Tool Factory Technical Center, said that the improvement of modern manufacturing methods will enable manufacturers to adjust the selection criteria of tools. The choice of high-speed cutting tools will emphasize the overall efficiency of the system, and whether the tool products can meet the production. The flexible requirements of the system will become an important criterion for bulk procurement.
