"BPA-free" plastic products are not safe and worry-free

Today, plastic products companies, from bottled water to straw cups, have promoted “BPA-free” as a safety indicator in advertising. However, a new study by the University of California, Los Angeles, shows that a bisphenol A alternative, bisphenol S (BPS), accelerates embryonic development and disrupts the reproductive system.

"BPA-free" plastic products are not safe and worry-free
The study, published in the journal Secretology, was the first to examine the effects of bisphenol A and bisphenol S on key brain cells that control growth and their involvement in reproductive organs. Nancy Wien, a senior author of the research paper and a professor of physiology at David Geffen Medical School, and a reproductive endocrinologist, said the study showed that the replacement of bisphenol A for plastics is not necessarily safer.
The researchers chose zebrafish as the subject because the embryos of the zebrafish are transparent and easy to "see" the growth of the cells. They found that after exposure to low levels (equivalent to levels in polluted river water) bisphenol A and bisphenol S, the embryonic developmental phase of zebrafish changed within 25 hours, compared to the absence of bisphenol A and bis The water in phenolic S is much faster. Wien said that accelerated hatching of fish eggs means premature birth. The researchers also used green fluorescent protein to mark the development of brain cells that control reproductive and endocrine processes in fish. They found that the number of endocrine neurons increased by 40%, indicating that bisphenol A does regulate the reproductive system. Wien said that exposure to low levels of bisphenol A has a major impact on embryonic control of developing brain cells, as well as "this effect is also present in bisphenol S products, and bisphenol S is not harmless."
Surprisingly, however, the study also found that bisphenol A and bisphenol S not only pass through the estrogen system, but also through some thyroid hormone systems. Wien explained that thyroid hormone is very important for brain development during pregnancy, so this study is of great significance for human embryo and fetal development.
The data from the study also supported the hypothesis that the chemical industry had previously proposed that "chemicals disrupt the endocrine system leading to premature birth and puberty in humans." Wien's lab intends to explore issues such as neuronal over-regulation that may lead to premature puberty and disruption of reproductive system development in subsequent studies.
