FAG angular contact ball bearings are widely used in various industrial applications due to their high precision and durability. These bearings come in different types, and their ability to withstand high temperatures depends on the material, heat treatment, and design.
For standard angular contact ball bearings with an outer diameter less than 240mm, the normal heat treatment process ensures stability at temperatures below 150°C. However, when operating above 150°C, special heat treatment is required. These bearings are typically marked with suffixes S1 to S4 (as per DIN 623), indicating their maximum operating temperature:
- **S1**: Maximum operating temperature of 200°C
- **S2**: Maximum operating temperature of 250°C
- **S3**: Maximum operating temperature of 300°C
- **S4**: Maximum operating temperature of 350°C
When the outer diameter exceeds 240mm, FAG angular contact ball bearings generally remain stable up to 200°C. However, there are several other factors that influence their performance under high-temperature conditions.
**1. Cage Material and Lubrication**
Some angular contact ball bearings are made with glass fiber-reinforced nylon 66 cages, which are suitable for working temperatures not exceeding 120°C. If oil lubrication is used and the oil contains additives, it may reduce the cage's service life. Additionally, when the temperature exceeds 120°C, aging lubricating oil can cause premature wear of the cage. Therefore, regular inspection and timely replacement of lubricants are essential.
**2. Sealed Bearings and Grease Performance**
Sealed angular contact ball bearings use high-quality lithium-based grease, which can tolerate short-term exposure to temperatures up to 120°C. However, if the operating temperature reaches 70°C or higher, the lifespan of the lithium-based grease will be significantly reduced. It’s important to choose the right type of grease for high-temperature environments.
**3. High-Temperature Applications**
For continuous operation in high-temperature environments, it is recommended to use specialized high-temperature grease and heat-resistant sealing materials. Standard seals should not exceed 110°C for optimal performance.
**4. Sealing Materials and Safety**
In some cases, high-temperature sealing compounds may be used. However, these materials can emit harmful gases and smoke when exposed to temperatures over 300°C. Special care must be taken during welding or similar processes to avoid potential hazards.
